Imaging and Optics
We design and fabricate novel micro-photonic devices for imaging and sensing, which include visible-light optical coherence tomography (vis-OCT), nano/micro fabrication and photoacoustic imaging, and ophthalmic imaging.
Developing new engineering tools to improve vision loss diagnosis and management, and restore sight
The personal impact of vision loss is immense. The Northwestern University Center for Engineering in Vision and Ophthalmology (CEVO) connects engineering innovations with clinical needs by developing, translating, and disseminating new tools to improve the diagnosis and management of vision loss, and to ultimately restore sight.
CEVO is committed to translating engineering discoveries into ophthalmology practice with a focus on the interdisciplinary training of next-generation engineers and physicians.
We design and fabricate novel micro-photonic devices for imaging and sensing, which include visible-light optical coherence tomography (vis-OCT), nano/micro fabrication and photoacoustic imaging, and ophthalmic imaging.
We develop novel bioelectrical devices, patient-specific surgical planning, additive microfabrication, patient-specific 3D printing, and reprogrammed human-derived cells to improve and treat irreversible diseases.
We advance cell-specific drug delivery strategies based on novel biocompatible nanomaterials and nanostructures to improve the efficiency of drug development and sustain stable drug release. We also seek to repurpose FDA-approved drugs to treat chronic eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
We build new analytical and AI-based image processing technologies to achieve highly repeatable functional analysis of, for example, ocular metabolism, neuro synoptical connections, and degenerations. We also seek to develop an AI-backed cloud network to manage systemic diseases - such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerations - through eye imaging.
